BEIJING: "The Chinese people's blood should not be shed in vain, and those responsible for this incident will pay the price," the Chinese Foreign Ministry warned.

On Tuesday afternoon, three Chinese nationals and a local man were killed in what seemed to be a deliberate suicide attack outside the Confucius Institute at the University of Karachi.

According to reports, the Chinese Foreign Ministry "strongly condemns and expresses great anger" over the serious terrorist assault, and "conveys profound condolences to the victims and sympathy to the injured and bereaved families."

The Chinese Foreign Ministry and diplomatic missions in Pakistan would continue to push relevant Pakistani ministries to deal with the aftermath, treat the injured, and resolutely prosecute the terrorist groups involved.

"Based on the surveillance footage, the attack appears to be a suicide bombing," Li Wei, a national security expert at the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, said on Tuesday, adding that this could be an upgrade from the Balochistan Liberation Army's usual roadside bombing tactics (BLA).

The BLA utilised more roadside bombs to launch terror operations before 2021. However, the BLA has honed its attack methods since then, including using minors as suicide bombers, according to Li, who added that "this is presumably because they were assisted by other parties." Experts believe the terrorist attack on Chinese citizens is unrelated to Pakistan's recent political reforms. While there have been occasional protests since the change in leadership, reports said that the situation has not been out of hand.
