China urged Ukraine and Russia to display "maximum restraint" in the ongoing battle, which has lasted 20 days as of Tuesday, in a meeting with US officials in Rome, according to reports.
Yang Jiechi, China's Central Foreign Affairs Commission chairman, made the statements during a seven-hour meeting with US National Security Adviser (NSA) Jake Sullivan in the Italian capital on Monday.
In a read-out account of the conference issued by China on Tuesday, Jiechi was quoted as saying, "All parties should exercise maximum caution, safeguard civilians, and avoid a large-scale humanitarian crisis."
"The international community should encourage the situation to cool down as quickly as possible," he said, adding that China was committed to encouraging peace talks. Yang, on the other hand, stated that "legitimate concerns of all sides" must be addressed.
The US National Security Agency discussed a variety of concerns in US-China relations during the meeting, including Russia's conflict against Ukraine, according to a White House statement. It further stated that Yang and Sullivan "emphasised the significance of keeping open lines of communication between the United States and China."
