Islamabad: In a distressing incident, a convoy transporting Chinese engineers to the Beijing-funded Gwadar Port in Pakistan's southwest was targeted by an attack on Sunday. According to Pakistan's military media affairs wing, the country's security forces swiftly responded, neutralizing one terrorist and injuring three others. The incident was reported by Dawn, a Pakistan-based news outlet.

The Baloch Liberation Army's (BLA) Majeed Brigade, a suicide unit of the separatist group, has claimed responsibility for the attack on the Chinese engineers in Gwadar, as reported by The Balochistan Post. The BLA stated through a statement reported by AFP that the attack was carried out against the convoy of Chinese engineers in Gwadar and that the situation was still ongoing. Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) has reported that security forces have cordoned off the area and initiated a search operation.

Former Balochistan minister Sarfraz Bugti strongly condemned the attack, using X (formerly Twitter) to express his sentiments. He stated, "I strongly condemn the heinous terror attack on Chinese workers' convoy in Gwadar. Thankfully, no loss of life happened, but there are reports that the ambush has been repulsed and the attackers have been killed." He also praised the Pakistani armed forces for their resolute efforts in thwarting such attacks.

The attack has exposed the internal divisions among militant groups, as Pakistan's armed forces continue to counter their malicious intentions. The incident highlights the continued security challenges faced by projects linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), with various Baloch separatist factions targeting infrastructure related to the initiative. This has necessitated the deployment of substantial security personnel to safeguard China's interests in the region.
