According to state broadcaster CCTV, Xi made the comments to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky over the phone. According to the report, Xi told Zelensky that China would prioritise advancing peace negotiations and work towards a cease-fire as soon as possible.

Early in April, Xi declared his readiness to speak with Zelensky. Zelensky had repeatedly requested a meeting with Xi, including following the Chinese president's recent trip to Moscow to meet with Vladimir Putin.
