NEW DELHI: In a major turnout, India's top men's doubles pair Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, the defending champions, today, January  19, pulled out of their 2nd-round match of the India Open Super 750 tournament due to injury concerns, Badminton Association of India said.

Taking to Twitter, Badminton Association of India posted: "India's top men's doubles pair SatChi has unfortunately pulled out of the tournament due to an injury. A sad moment for all of us!"

The star duo withdrew from the match against the Chinese pair Liu Yu Chen and Ou Xuan Yi due to a groin injury suffered by Satwik.

The defending men's doubles champions, who won the French Open last year after defeating the Taipei team of Lu Ching-Yao and Yang Po-Han, were vying for their second Super 750 championship of their careers at the India Open in 2023.

The World No. 5 pair defeated Scotland's Christopher Grimley and Mathew Grimley in the first round on Tuesday with ease, winning 21-13, 21-15 in 41 minutes.

After winning the 2022 French Open, the Indian team wrote history by being the first Indian men's pair to win the Super 750 championship.

P.V. Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, and H.S. Prannoy all left the competition early in the first two days, giving the Indian delegation a mixed bag of outcomes thus far.
