Kochi: A bishop named 'Mar Joseph Kallarangatt' of the Cyro Malabar Church Pala Dharmaprovince in Kottayam, Kerala, had expressed concern over 'love jihad' as well as 'narcotics jihad' with Christian girls, after which Muslims have started protesting against the bishop. Many Muslims also gathered outside the bishop's house to protest. The Muslim Coordination Committee along with 200 people rushed to the bishop's house to protest.

Several Muslim institutions have also accused the bishop of spreading communal disharmony. The Kottayam Mahlu Muslim Coordination Committee has also lodged a complaint against the bishop. PDP also held a protest outside the bishop's house. A complaint has been lodged against the bishop with the Kottayam police chief. Action has also been sought against him under non-bailable Section 153A (making statements creating enmity among different communities). Muslim institutions said a sacred word described in a holy book has been linked by the bishop with wrong events. The institutions have accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of promoting Christian-Muslim enmity. However, the local BJP unit has supported the bishop. BJP state unit president K Surendran said it is a serious problem which the society should seriously consider.

Muslim institutions say no investigating agency has found anything like 'narcotics jihad.' They were barricaded and stopped by the police during the Muslim protest, which was followed by clashes between the police and protesters. The Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) has said that the seriousness of the bishop's statement that no community was targeted should be discussed. The institute also demanded an inquiry against the narcotics mafia. Many Catholic institutions have also come out in support of the bishop and took out a march to support the bishop's statement.
