NEW DELHI: Supreme Court Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi has written a letter to PM Narendra Modi urging him to increase the number of judges and raise the retirement age of High Court judges to 65 years. CJI Ranjan Gogoi has also urged PM Modi to make a periodic appointment of retired judges of the Supreme Court and High Court (of the Constitution) under Articles 128 and 224A respectively to resolve cases pending for years.

Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi has said that 58,669 cases are pending before the Supreme Court and the number is increasing as new cases are registered. He has said that due to lack of judges, adequate number of Constitution Benches are not being constituted to decide on important matters relating to the question of law.

He wrote in his letter, "You remember that about three decades ago in 1998, the sanctioned strength of judges in the Supreme Court was increased from 18 to 26 and then two decades later, in 2009, it was increased to 31, including the Chief Justice. so as to expedite the disposal of cases," he said.
