After an intermediate first-year (Class 11) student hung himself at Telangana Social Welfare Residential College close here, police were investigating the sexual harassment angle.

The 17-year-old student was found hanging in a classroom at the college located in Gowlidoddi on Saturday, sending shock waves across the student population at the government-run residential school. Vamsi Krishna, a student of the intermediate first year from Nagarkurnool district, had returned to the college dormitory on January 31 when the campus reopened following the third phase of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The student, according to police, committed suicide in one of the classrooms on the night of February 18 and 19. On Saturday, the college staff realised the child was missing from his daily morning drill and began looking for him. One of the classrooms was locked when they arrived. When they opened it, they found him hanging from the roof.

The body was taken to the government-run Osmania Hospital for an autopsy. From his things, they found two suicide notes. He mentioned in one of the letters that he had been sexually harassed and that he couldn't tell his parents and teachers about it. The student said in another suicide letter claiming he was taking an extremely serious step because he was suffering from blood cancer.

Vamsi Krishna's parents and other relatives came to Hyderabad after learning of the tragedy and staged a protest against the college's negligence. They were curious as to what the hostel's in-charge was doing when he left the hostel to go to the classrooms. Under the Cyberabad police commissionerate, a case of death under suspicious circumstances was filed at Gachibowli police station. Gone Suresh, a circle inspector, said they were investigating on the case from all perspectives.
