New Delhi: West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has opposed the decision to introduce the 'Anti-People' Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2020 in Parliament. Expressing her opposition to the bill, Mamata Banerjee has written a letter to PM Narendra Modi on Saturday. Chief Minister Mamata in a letter has appealed not to go ahead with the bill. Mamata Banerjee appealed to Prime Minister Modi to ensure that a comprehensive and transparent discussion on the subject is held at the earliest.

The same Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2021 gives power users the option of choosing from different service providers. It will work just as you get options in the telecom service. The Lok Sabha in its bulletin issued on July 12, 2021, had stated that the Central Government has a strategy to introduce the Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2021 in the current session of Parliament. These Bills are included in the 17 Bills which have a strategy to introduce.

Mamata Banerjee wrote in her letter, "I am writing this letter to lodge my protest against the new decision of the Central Government to introduce the much-awaited Electricity (Amendment) Bill, 2020 in Parliament. It was proposed to be introduced last year, but many of us underlined the anti-people aspects of the draft law. I told you in a letter dated 12th June 2020 about all the major disadvantages of the Bill.''
