Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswamy, Deputy Chief Minister O Pannerselvam and Leader of the Opposition M K Stalin welcomed the Supreme Court order bestowing equal rights to women in inheriting family property. Expressing happiness over the verdict, Palanisamy said the Apex Court had upheld social justice in the country.

The judgment would pave the way for women’s development, tweeted Pannerselvam, welcoming it wholeheartedly. Stalin said that he would consider it as a victory for DMK’s principles as former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had brought in a law providing equal rights for women in property way back in 1989 itself. The judgment would lay the foundation for women standing up acquiring both social and economic equal rights.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court expanded on a Hindu woman’s right to be a joint legal heir and inherit ancestral property on terms equal to male heirs. A three-judge bench of Justices Arun Mishra, S. Nazeer and M.R. Shah said the provisions contained in substituted Section 6 of the Hindu Succession Act, 1956 confer the status of coparcener on the daughter born before or after amendment in the same manner as a son with the same rights and liabilities. Coparcener is a term used for a person who assumes a legal right in parental property by birth only.
