Kolkata: The Kolkata High Court has allowed Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's nephew Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira Banerjee to travel abroad for treatment. Abhishek Banerjee and Rujira Banerjee had sought permission to travel to Dubai for treatment, but the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had opposed granting them permission. After this, Abhishek and Rujira Banerjee moved to the High Court. Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira Banerjee are accused of money laundering in the coal scam in West Bengal.
Abhishek Banerjee and his wife were asked not to go abroad by the investigating agency. Abhishek Banerjee had urged that he be allowed to go to Dubai for eye treatment. The ED had turned down Abhishek Banerjee's demand, after which he approached the Kolkata high court. It may be recalled that Abhishek Banerjee has also appeared before the investigating agency in Delhi in this case. He was questioned in Delhi for about eight hours. According to information, Abhishek Banerjee has been booked under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
This case is actually related to the illegal extraction of coal from the coal mines of Asansol, Durgapur, Purulia, and Bankura in West Bengal. It is alleged that a large quantity of coal was illegally extracted from these mines and thousands of crores of rupees were earned by selling it. The CBI registered a case in this case in 2020. Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira Banerjee's name has come up in the case.
