Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and nephew of Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee, reached the Enforcement Directorate (ED) office in Delhi on Monday to join the interrogation in the coal scam case. Earlier, he had filed a petition against this summon in the Supreme Court. But the court refused to hear it urgently today, after which Abhishek Banerjee had to go to the ED office.
Significantly, in the coal scam of West Bengal, a case was registered under PMLA. In this, the names of Mamata Banerjee's nephew and TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira Banerjee were also revealed. That's why the ED had summoned both of them for questioning. Challenging this summons in the Supreme Court, the Banerjee family had called the allegations against them baseless. It was said that the summons of the ED is unnecessary in this. Apart from this, the order of March 11 of the Delhi High Court was challenged in the petition. In this, the petition of the ED to cancel the summons issued against him was dismissed.
What is coal scam?
This case is related to the smuggling of coal from the coal mines of Bengal. In this, there was talk of smuggling on a large scale from the coal mines of Asansol, Durgapur, Purulia, Bankura. It is alleged that illegal mining of coal was carried out from these places by extracting it illegally. Anoop Manjhi alias Lala is said to be the kingpin of this smuggling. There was also talk of illegal earning of thousands of crores in this. At present, Lala is absconding, the CBI is continuously raiding his hideouts. The CBI had registered a case in this regard in November 2020. The second accused is Vinay Mishra. Vijay Mishra is considered very close to Abhishek Banerjee. Vinay is also out of the clutches of CBI right now. Some witnesses had also named Rujira. It is alleged that the strings of cattle smuggling and coal smuggling are linked to each other.
