CARACAS : Colombia and Venezuela have re-established full diplomatic relations, e years after Caracas severed them over Bogota's support for opposition leader Juan Guaido.

According to DPA, Venezuela's Felix Plasencia and Colombia's Armando Benedetti, both ambassadors, arrived in Caracas on Sunday. In a tweet that included images of Benedetti's arrival in Venezuela, the Colombian presidency said, "We are starting to work to repair the social and human thread that binds us."

Benedetti had said in a tweet before leaving that his goal was to "rebuild relations with our neighbour and restore the hurt left in the hearts of our people as a result of a rupture in relations that should never have occurred." Both Nicolas Maduro, the president of Venezuela, and Gustavo Petro, the leftist new president of Colombia, have previously declared their intention to reestablish diplomatic ties.

In February 2019, after then-President Ivan Duque recognised opposition leader Juan Guaido as Venezuela's interim leader, Maduro's government broke off ties with Bogota.  Guaido was recognised by dozens of nations, but despite the support of the army, Maduro has remained in power.

2018's contentious election saw Maduro win a second term. Millions of Venezuelans have fled overseas as a result of the country's economic collapse and political upheaval.
