New Delhi: The ruckus over NRC and CAA in the country was not even cold enough that the Center has also approved the National Population Register (NPR). Former Union Minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram has targeted the BJP over the difference between the NPR and the current NPR implemented in the year 2010. He tweeted that, "NPR had helped in the 2011 census, there was no mention of NRC in it."

Chidambaram further said, "The BJP-led central government has a bigger and more sinister agenda and that is why the NPR TEXT passed by them yesterday as well as the NPR 2010 context is extremely dangerous and different. " He said, "If the BJP government's intentions are noble, then the government should unconditionally state that they support the 2010 NPR form and design and have no intention of joining the controversial NRC."

Explaining the difference between NRC and NPR, Congress leader Ajay Maken had said in an interview that NPR does not require the birth date or birthplace of a citizen's parents. If a person has stayed at one place for one day for the last 6 months or intends to stay at the same place for the next 6 months, then he will be considered as a normal resident. He said that at present time NPR is the first step taken by the Central Government towards NRC.
