Kolkata: Congress has started sharpening its preparations for the Bengal Assembly elections. The Congress and the Left have decided to contest elections together, but the formula for seat division has not been decided yet. In such a situation, Congress has formed a committee for an electoral alliance with the Left. This committee will make a decision on seat-sharing by negotiating with the Left Front regarding seat-sharing and joint programs for the Bengal assembly elections.

The Congress has appointed Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, the chief of the Bengal Congress, as chairman of the committee formed by the Congress for the Bengal assembly elections. Apart from Adhir Ranjan Chaudhary, Abdul Mannan, Pradeep Bhattacharya, and Nepal Mahato have been included in the four-member committee. Jitin Prasad, Congress in-charge of Bengal, has said that this committee will hold talks with the left parties about the division of seats and joint programs for the West Bengal elections.

The Congress also joined hands with the Left Front in the 2016 Bengal Assembly elections. In this election, the CPI-M fielded candidates for 148 seats and won 26 seats. At the same time, Congress contested 92 seats, out of which it won 44 seats. Along with this, the All India Forward Bloc as an ally of the Left parties contested 25 seats and won two seats. The CPI contested 11 seats and won 1 seat. With this, the Revolutionary Socialist Party contested 19 seats and won 3 seats.
