Congress will split under non-Gandhi chief: Natwar Singh

New Delhi: Currently Congress party is undergoing leadership crisis. Senior party leader Natwar Singh endorsed Congress general secretary from Uttar Pradesh (East) Priyanka Gandhi’s name for the post of party president. He said that the party will split within 24 hours if a non-Gandhi is elected as its chief.

He  further said that Congress should not name someone from outside the Gandhi family as the president of the party as the decision, he believes, would lead to infighting. Talking to ANI, he said, "It is unfortunate that the country's 134-years-old party does not have a party president. I do not think apart from the Gandhi family, anyone should be elected as the president.”

Further, he lauded Priyanka for her recent visit to Sonbhadra to meet the families of victims killed in a firing incident."You must have witnessed what she did in a village in Uttar Pradesh. It was amazing. She stayed there and achieved what she wanted to," the former external affairs minister said.

On the question of Priyanka’s selection as the party president, Singh said, "It will depend on Priyanka because her brother (Rahul Gandhi) had said that nobody from the Gandhi family will become the Congress president. Now, the family will have to reverse the decision and only they can do it."
