New Delhi: TheIndian Navy is going to take a historic step under the Agneepath Recruitment Scheme brought in by the Central Government. For the first time in history, the Navy will recruit women sailors through the Agneepath Recruitment Scheme. These recruited women sailors will be deployed on the warships after completion of training. While women officers already exist in the three services - Army, Air Force and Navy, this will be the first time that the posts of Below Officer Rank Personnel (PBOR) will be open to women.

Under the Agneepath scheme, the Army is estimated to recruit around 40,000 soldiers this year, with the Navy likely to induct around 3,000 sailors and the Air Force is set to recruit 3,000 airmen this year. Vice Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, chief of personnel, said at a tri-service press conference at the Defence Ministry on Sunday, "We are still preparing the right number of women sailors to be recruited through the Agneepath scheme. The first batch of Agniveer will start in November this year.

"The Indian Navy currently has 30 women officers sailing on separate ships (INSs). We have decided that under the Agneepath scheme, we will recruit women as well. They will also be deployed on warships. He further informed that arrangements are being made at INS Chilka in Odisha to accommodate women sailors, a basic training establishment for the Indian Navy.
