Ahmedabad: A sessions court in Mehsana, Gujarat has restrained Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani and 10 other accused from leaving Gujarat without the court's permission. The court on Saturday gave its verdict in the case of holding the rally without police permission in 2017. The magistrate's court had sentenced Mevani and other accused to three months in jail in the case. The lower court's direction to avoid jail was to be challenged within a month from the date of judgement.
As soon as the accused approached the sessions court for bail on June 3, the judge granted bail. However, the court put a condition that Mevani and the other accused cannot leave Gujarat and they will have to submit their passports to the court. Other accused in the case include NCP leader Reshma Patel and Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch coordinator Subodh Parmar. The court last month convicted the accused of attending unlawful assembly under Section 143 of the IPC. All 10 convicts have been sentenced to three months in jail and a fine of one thousand rupees each.
What is the 'Azadi Kooch' rally case?
On July 12, 2017, a rally 'Azadi March' was organized from Mehsana to Dhanera in the Banaskantha district. The rally was taken out a year after some Dalits were publicly thrashed by alleged 'Gau Rakshaks' in Una over the skin of a dead cow. According to Mevani, the aim of the rally was to seek the Gujarat government's intervention to reclaim the rights of land allotted to Dalits, which was illegally occupied by goons and anti-social elements. Though the rally was not allowed, Mevani had taken out the rally, after which a case was registered against her.
