Moga: Pilot squadron leader Abhinav Chaudhary has died after a MiG-21 bison plane crashed into a field amid heavy rains in Moga district of Punjab. Moga Superintendent of Police (SP) Gurdeep Singh said the aircraft was on a training flight from Suratgarh in Rajasthan when it met with an accident in Langiana village on Thursday night.

The Indian Air Force has ordered a Court of Inquiry to ascertain the cause of the accident and said it mourns the tragic death of its officer. Singh said, "The plane crashed into a field and caught fire." It was raining heavily at that time. He said there were no other casualties or damage to property in the accident.

The body of the pilot was found about two kilometres away from the accident site. The incident took place just 200 metres away from some of the major 'havelis'. Singh told the media over phone, "If the plane had crashed over these houses, many people would have been killed. He said it appears that the pilot had taken out a parachute to get off safely. At the same time, he said, "It appears that he broke his neck when he hit the ground, which led him death."
