According to the data shared by the Union Health Ministry on Friday, India recorded 44,658 new cases of the novel coronavirus, along with 496 deaths due to the infection in the past 24 hours. The country witnessed a total of 32,988 discharges in the last 24 hours, taking the total recovery rate at around 97.63 percent and total recoveries to 3,18,21,428.The total active cases of COVID-19 in India rose to 3,44,899, the ministry data showed. 

The total death toll in India is now at 4,36,861. The first death due to COVID pandemic was reported In India,  in  March 2020. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 51,49,54,309 samples have been tested up to August 26 for COVID-19. Of these 18,24,931 samples were tested on Wednesday.

Meanwhile,  by Thursday's end hours, Southern state Kerala recorded 30,007 Covid-19 positive cases and 162 deaths The rising daily COVID-19 cases in Kerala has kept the health officials and authorities on their toes. For the first time since May 20, Kerala logged 30,007 fresh COVID-19 cases, the second consecutive day it reported more than 30,000, and 162 deaths which pushed the total infection count in the state to 39.13 lakh and the toll to 20,134.
