NEW DELHI: India registered 3,038 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours with active cases surging to more than 21,179 cases across the country, the union health ministry said on Tuesday, April 4. The daily positivity rate has risen to 6.12% as the hike in the pace of testing is reflected in the uptick in Covid cases.

The nation has so far reported more than 530,901 deaths from its more than 44.8 million cases. Epidemiologists claim that the number of Covid cases is currently doubling every 4-5 days. Covid instances have gradually risen across the nation, with Kerala reporting 6,229 active cases while Karnataka reported 1,372 active cases. Maharashtra has 3,532 active cases, followed by Gujarat with 2,214, Delhi with 1,409, Tamil Nadu with 993, and Himachal Pradesh with 785.

Considering an increase in the trend of Covid cases, researchers concluded that the Covid-19 variation XBB.1.16 is to blame for the current spike in Covid cases. Yet, scientists assert that Indians have evolved a hybrid form of immunity (due to vaccination and natural infection). As a result of its mild nature, the current Covid-19 variations won't require hospitalisation. However, the government has advised individuals to complete their vaccinations if they haven't already and to use masks in busy situations. Although there are currently 21,179 ongoing cases in India, 4,41,77,204 people have recovered from the virus, with a 98.76% recovery rate.

The state and union territory governments were instructed by the union health ministry to use a risk assessment-based strategy to stop and contain the virus. The health ministry recommended the state governments to assess the Covid-19 situation at a micro level (district and sub-districts) and keep their attention on putting the appropriate measures in place for timely and effective management of Covid-19 while also ensuring effective compliance.

In light of the limited data available, the health ministry advised that "the five-fold strategy, i.e., Test-Track Treat-Vaccination should be followed with continued focus on adequate & proactive testing as per guidelines, monitoring new and emerging clusters of new Covid-19 cases along with monitoring the trend of Influenza-like illness (ILI) & SARI cases on a regular basis for detecting early warning signals of the spread of infection."
