Recently, the Indian Veterinary Research Institute has claimed that fresh cow urine may contain potentially harmful bacteria that can be harmful to human health if consumed. The Indian Veterinary Research Institute claimed in one of its research reports that any human should avoid drinking cow urine directly, which can make them sick.

In the same research report, it has been claimed that buffalo urine is more effective than cow urine. A study led by Bhoj Raj Singh of the institute and PhD students at IVRI found that the urine of cows and bulls contains about 14 types of harmful bacteria, including the presence of Escherichia coli, which can cause stomach infection. So one should directly avoid it.

This report of these students has been published in the online research website ResearchGate. The analysis of 73 urine samples from cows, buffaloes, and humans showed that the antibacterial activity in buffalo urine was much better than that of cows, the head of the epidemiology department said. "We collected samples of 3 types of cows—Sahiwal, Tharparkar, and Vindavani (cross-breeds)—from local dairy farms, as well as samples of buffaloes and humans. Research conducted between June and November 2022 concluded that a large proportion of urine from healthy individuals carried potentially pathogenic bacteria. However, the main takeaway from our study is that cow urine cannot be recommended for humans under any circumstances, he added. Researchers also claimed that cow urine is said to be antibacterial, but this is not true.
