Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) organized its fourth convocation on November 18, 2020. At the Jawaharlal Nehru University convocation, President Ram Nath Kovind urged the young graduates to take inspiration from the ancient Indian Universities of Takshashila, Nalanda, Vikramshila, and Vallabhi.
The convocation ceremony was conducted completely through online mode due to the Covid-19 situation in the country. At the JNU convocation 2020, around 603 scholars received their PhDs in 15 varied disciplines. In dealing with present-day challenges, one can draw inspiration from the ancient universities of Takshashila, Nalanda, Vikramshila and Vallabhi which had set high standards of teaching and research, the president said.
"Today's Indian scholars should try to create such an original body of knowledge which is utilised for dealing with contemporary global challenges. JNU is among those select institutions of higher learning which can reach globally comparable excellence," the President said. About the COVID-19 pandemic, he said the whole world is in a state of crisis because of it".
The present President of India set some examples of great scholars like Charaka, Aryabhata, Chanakya, Panini, Patanjali, Gargi, Maitreyi, and Thiruvalluvar who were the alumni of the ancient universities and their invaluable contributions to various fields of medical science, mathematics, astronomy, grammar, and social development.
