Cricket Fraternity Mourns the Loss of Sunil Dev, Former BCCI Vice-President

New Delhi: From a young cricket player for Young Friends Club in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) league to the vice-president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India after serving as the DDCA sports secretary for almost three decades.

Sunil Dev, who passed away on August 2 at the age of 75, was an accomplished cricket administrator.

He also served as the cricket manager for the Indian team that traveled to South Africa and Zimbabwe in 1996–1997, captained by Sachin Tendulkar, and for the 2007 T20 World Cup victory, led by M. S. Dhoni. Additionally, he oversaw the group that traveled to England in 2014.

He participated in intervarsity cricket as a wicketkeeper-batsman for St. Stephen's College. He participated in one Ranji Trophy game, where he and Vijay Mehra opened Delhi's batting against Jammu and Kashmir in the 1969–1970 season, scoring 42 runs.

He played with Bishan Singh Bedi, Rajender Goel, Mehra, Ashok Gandotra, Daljeet Saxena, and Suresh Luthra in that group. Mehra was the team's leader.

He served as the DDCA's sports secretary at the time that the league's sports committee, which included club representatives, was established. He used to ride a rickety two-wheeler to the Feroz Shah Kotla in his early days as a DDCA official.

He belonged to the Delhi Gymkhana, the National Sports Club of India, and the Cricket Club of India in addition to the DDCA.

Sunil Dev, a supporter of the Congress party, was friends with the late Madhav Rao Scindia, Congressman Kamal Nath, and Vikram Kaul of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation.

He frequently sat with former cricketers and journalists as they watched Ranji Trophy games.

Sunil Dev underwent hernia surgery at the Apollo Hospital before passing away. He was left behind by his wife and two daughters.
