Yashpal Sharma, a former Indian player and part of the 1983 World Champions team, died of a surprise attack on Tuesday. Yashpal Sharma has played 37 Tests and 42 ODIs for India in his career. He was 66 years old now. After his death, there is a wave of grief in the sports world. Senior leaders including UP CM Yogi Adityanath and country's sports minister Anurag Thakur have condoled his demise.
UP CM Yogi Adityanath tweeted, "The passing away of shri Yashpal Sharma ji, a renowned cricketer and member of the 1983 World Cup champion Indian cricket team, is deeply saddened. I pray to Lord Ram to give the departed soul the strength to place in his feet and to bear this immense sorrow to the bereaved family members. Om Shanti!'' Sports Minister Anurag Thakur tweeted, 'Yashpal Sharma was the second Indian player to score the most runs in the 1983 World Cup. He was also an umpire and national selector. Their contribution can never be forgotten.'
Yashpal Sharma made his debut in international cricket in 1978 with the ODI match against Pakistan at Sialkot. The very next year, he also played his first Test against England at Lord's, the mecca of cricket. Sharma played his last ODI against England in Chandigarh in 1985 while the last Test against the West Indies in Delhi in 1983. He has scored 1606 runs in Test cricket with 2 centuries.
