Sydney: Pat Cummins' former Test teammate James Pattinson has suggested that if the fast bowler is given the chance to captain Australia during the Ashes, which begin on December 8 at the Gabba, he would make an "unbelievable" captain.

After 37-year-old wicketkeeper-batter Tim Paine stepped down recently over a sexting controversy with a former Cricket Tasmania official, the position of Australian Test team captain has become vacant ahead of the five-Test Ashes campaign.

Pattinson, a right-arm speed bowler who has played 21 Tests, believes Cummins has all the cricketing qualities to lead Australia against England's Joe Root. "Cummins would be fantastic. He possesses all of the characteristics of an Australian captain "Following the completion of a Sheffield Shield match on Tuesday evening, Pattinson was reported by news.com.au as stating.
