HYDERABAD: the Samiti of Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav (BGU) continued its protest in Hyderabad demanding the Telangana government to permit immersion of Ganesh idols in Hussain Sagar like in the past.

The Samiti leaders sat on hunger strike at Baheti Bhavan in Siddiamber Bazar on Wednesday. The  general secretary Bhagwanth Rao, vice-president Rama Raju and other leaders were participating in the hunger strike.

The leaders of the Samiti had tried to take out a bike rally at Tank Bund on Tuesday to oppose what it urges the restrictions being imposed on immersion of Ganesh idols in Hussain Sagar lake.

Since there was no permission for the bike rally, the city police stopped the participants and took them into custody. Despite the government's confirmation that immersion of only Ganesh idols made of plaster of Paris (PoP) is forbidden in Hussain Sagar per Telangana High Court rulings, the BGUS persisted in its protest.

Authorities will, however, permit the dipping of clay idols in Hussain Sagar. POP idols, according to the authorities, can be submerged in 31 lakes and 74 baby ponds located across the city.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has put plans in place to address this. It has sent out 130 mobile cranes and 280 stationary cranes. The immersion procedure will be assisted by more than 10,000 sanitation employees.
In its ruling dated July 21, 2022, the High Court upheld the ban on PoP idol immersion in Hussain Sagar beginning this year.
The celebrations, which started on August 31 with the installation of countless idols, will last nine days and conclude on September 9 with a sizable immersion parade. Idols are transported to Hussain Sagar for immersion from all around the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad as well as the surrounding areas.

The GHMC began making preparations on Wednesday for the immersion of the idols into Hussain Sagar from Tank Bund. Ten cranes were placed on the Tank Bund, but the municipal authorities had not received the state government's final approval.

For the immersion, the GHMC has already placed eight tanks at NTR Marg and four on Necklace Road.
