Bill for dam safety introduced in Lok Sabha amid opposition protests

NEW DELHI: The Central government tabled a bill yesterday in the Upper House to set up a committee along with the National Authority for Testing and taking Care of Dams across the country. Union Water Force Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat while introducing the Dam Safety Bill, 2019 said that there is a need for a law to set standards for the safety of dams across the country.

Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said that the bill seeks to establish a National Dam Safety Authority to look into the specific dams properly, take care and resolve unresolved issues among the states. In addition, the Government has proposed to set up a National Committee on The Safety of the Dam to prevent disaster-related to the failure of the dam.

According to the bill, the committee will uphold the standards of dam safety and formulate policies to ensure the safety of dams. Shekhawat said that out of the total 5,344 dams in the country, 92 percent of the dams have been constructed on rivers flowing from one state to another and 293 dams are more than 100 years old.

Bhartruhari Mahtab of the Biju Janata Dal has also questioned the legislative competence of the bill. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has also opposed the bill and demanded that it be referred to the Parliamentary Standing Committee.
