NEW DELHI: Security has been tightened across various parts of Delhi, including areas like Shaheen Bagh and Jamia Nagar, following the enforcement of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA) rules. The CAA, passed in Parliament in December 2019, triggered widespread protests nationwide, particularly in Delhi, with Jamia Millia Islamia and Shaheen Bagh being focal points of demonstrations in 2019-2020.

To maintain law and order, police and paramilitary personnel are on high alert, especially in northeast Delhi, where 43 hotspots have been identified. Increased patrols are being carried out in areas such as Seelampur, Jaffrabad, and Mustafabad. The cyber unit of Delhi Police is actively monitoring social media platforms to prevent the spread of misinformation and rumors.

Authorities are also ensuring security around educational institutions like Jamia Millia Islamia to prevent any potential protests against the CAA on campus. Similarly, enhanced security measures are being implemented in other parts of India, including Assam, where opposition parties have announced plans to protest against the CAA rules.

The CAA rules outline a process for reviewing citizenship applications, requiring applicants to register electronically through designated district-level committees. Document verification and oath of allegiance are part of the application process, with the Empowered Committee responsible for scrutinizing applications and granting Indian citizenship to eligible applicants.

The Modi government aims to provide Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from neighboring countries who arrived in India before December 31, 2014, through the implementation of the CAA rules. The heightened security measures in Delhi and other regions are intended to maintain peace and prevent any disturbances following the implementation of the CAA.
