NEW DELHI: With monthly goals through June, the high-level committee for Yamuna rejuvenation set up by the NGT and led by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has finalised a time-bound action plan with eight parameters.

The requirements include upgrading 13 CETPs for the treatment and control of industrial effluent, as well as sewage treatment plants (STPs), tapping and cleaning of drains, sewage networks in unapproved colonies and JJ clusters, septage management, and the restoration of floodplains.

The Delhi L-G presided over the high-level committee's inaugural meeting on Friday. "The meeting deliberated upon a concrete future plan of action," according to an official statement from the L-G office. "The meeting took stock of the prevalent situation of water quality in the river Yamuna and the various drains in the city, along with the status of Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) in the city and dwelling upon the gaps in the actions taken so far.

By January 31st, the committee is expected to submit its initial report. "It was determined to create a six-month action plan with monthly goals through June 2023. The same will be observed weekly, and on January 31st, the NGT will receive the first report "The statement said.

Addressing the officers, the LG cautioned the officers against shifting goalposts, "Due to past neglect, the task at hand is challenging but yet doable. Make sure the decisions made today are carried out in a mission-oriented manner without going beyond the agreed-upon deadlines. Any inadequacy on the part of officials won't be tolerated " he said.

On January 9, the National Green Tribunal established the committee in response to the Supreme Court's directive for the regeneration of the Yamuna. In its decision, the NGT stated that the committee had been established to monitor the execution of its directives for the cleaning of the Yamuna, and it had asked Delhi L-G VK Saxena to serve as its chairman.
