NEW DELHI: Delhi mayoral elections will take place on  Wednesday, February 22, after multiple postpone on account of ruckus following differences between Aam Aadmi party  and BJP members. The House was earlier summoned on January 6, January 25, and February 6. However, the meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will be again held on Wednesday at 11 am. 

The proposal by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to hold elections for the mayor, deputy mayor, and six standing committee members on February 22 was approved on Saturday by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena.

This followed the Supreme Court's decision that the election for mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi must take place first and that candidates do not have the right to vote in Corporation meetings. DY Chandrachud, the Chief Justice of India, led a panel that also ordered the relevant body to announce the mayor election.

The Municipal House must convene and elect the mayor within one month of the conclusion of the civic elections, as required by the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act. The disagreement over the nominated members' voting rights, however, has caused the election to be postponed three times.

Both the BJP and the Aam Aadmi party  have previously accused each other of preventing the mayoral election with the bone of contention being the appointment of aldermen and their voting rights in the House.

The BJP is allegedly attempting to steal the mandate from the AAP by granting voting privileges to the nominated members, according to the AAP, which has a majority with 134 of the 250 elected members.
