New Delhi: Former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Umar Khalid, accused in the Delhi riots case, has been granted interim bail for 7 days. Khalid got this bail to attend the marriage of his sister. Umar Khalid will be released from jail on December 23 and will have to surrender on December 30.

According to reports, Delhi riots mastermind Umar Khalid had sought 14-day interim bail to attend his sister's marriage in his bail plea. However, Additional Sessions Judge Amitabh Rawat granted him seven-day bail. The court has also put several conditions in Umar Khalid's bail, including sharing of his live location. In fact, Umar Khalid's lawyer has argued for his bail, saying that Umar Khalid will neither give any kind of interview nor talk to any person in the media. Umar Khalid is accused of inciting riots in Delhi under sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and  IPC in connection with the riots in Delhi in February 2020.

Let us know that in February 2020, there were protests in the national capital Delhi against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). During this time, Hindu-Muslim riots broke out in Jaffrabad, Maujpur, Babarpur, Ghonda, Chand Bagh, Shiv Vihar, Bhajanpura, and Yamuna Vihar areas of North East Delhi. A total of 53 people, including policemen, were killed and over 700 were injured in the riots. One of the main accused in these riots is former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councilor, Tahir Hussain. While hearing the case, the court had said that the purpose of the violent mob was only and only to kill and harm Hindus, for which the house of the then AAP councilor Tahir Hussain was used as a base. That is why these riots are also called anti-Hindu riots.
