New Delhi: The Karkardooma court has reserved its verdict on the bail plea of Umar Khalid, a former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student who is in jail on charges of Delhi riots. The court will now pronounce its verdict on Khalid's bail plea on March 14, seeking bail in the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act case in the Delhi riots.

During the hearing of Umar Khalid's bail plea in the Karkardooma court, his lawyer said that raising his voice against the ill-treatment meted out to him or speaking publicly does not mean that minorities are communal. Advocate Trideep Paes, appearing in the court, said the prosecution had blamed the silence of his client (Umar Khalid) on some WhatsApp groups for the crime. But there has never been any activity of their clients on these WhatsApp groups. This is the first time that one's silence is being considered against him.

He said in the court that calling CAA and NRC discriminatory does not make me communal at all. During this time, the lawyer also referred to Khalid's PhD thesis, which is based on the research done on the tribals of Jharkhand. "If a person raises an issue, he cannot call it communal. Only on this basis because he writes about a section of people, raising a voice for the minorities who are abused does not make them communal.''
