New Delhi is gearing up to host a groundbreaking roundtable discussion between the European Union (EU) and India focused on countering the exploitation of unmanned aerial systems (UAS), commonly known as drones, by terrorists and non-state actors.
Scheduled for February 8, 2024, this inaugural EU-India Track 1.5 dialogue aims to delve into the myriad of threats posed by consumer-grade drone technology. Experts from both the EU and India will convene to share insights and explore effective regulatory, tactical, and investigative responses to combatting UAS threats in their respective regions.
The proliferation of commercial drones in recent years has been remarkable, with advancements in technology making them increasingly accessible to consumers. Unfortunately, violent extremists have capitalized on the affordability and versatility of these devices, utilizing them for purposes ranging from reconnaissance to carrying out violent attacks.
This roundtable marks a significant milestone in the ongoing collaboration between the EU and India in the realm of counterterrorism. It builds upon previous initiatives, including training programs on chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) risk management for Indian security personnel, as well as expert discussions on combating online extremism, under the EU project Enhancing Security Cooperation In and With Asia (ESIWA).
Hervé Delphin, the EU Ambassador to India, emphasized the importance of sharing knowledge and experiences in addressing the evolving threat landscape. He highlighted the need for intensified dialogue and cooperation between the EU and India to effectively mitigate the risks posed by drones.
Terrorist organizations and individual extremists worldwide have swiftly adopted off-the-shelf drones, taking advantage of their affordability and adaptability. The rapid evolution of drone technology necessitates ongoing assessment and adaptation of mitigation strategies. Therefore, collaborative efforts and information-sharing are crucial in formulating a unified response to safeguard security and defense interests.
Organized by the ESIWA project in collaboration with India's National Security Guard and the EU Delegation to India, this roundtable underscores the Team Europe approach. Expert insights will be provided by entities such as the EU's Directorate General of Migration and Home Affairs, Spain's Ministry of the Interior, Hungary's national police, and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism.
