New Delhi: Three deer were mauled to death by stray dogs at the zoo in the national capital. Zoo officials have said that stray dogs attacked and killed two endangered 'Hog' deer and one 'Sika' i.e. Japanese deer. Officials said the incident took place on the night of November 12, 2022.

According to the information, the dogs climbed an 8 feet high wall and entered the enclosure of deer. Unaware of the attack, the guards found mutilated bodies of two 'Hog' deer the next morning, while 'Sika' was found lying injured. The 'Sika' deer also succumbed to its injuries during treatment. Zoo officials said the dogs may have entered through a pile of garbage and debris near the boundary wall. According to reports, an internal inquiry has been ordered into the incident. Zoo director Akansha Mahajan has said that due to the dumping of garbage near the boundary wall of the zoo, the height of the garbage pile has become equal to the boundary wall. This has made it easier for stray dogs to enter the zoo.

He has told that a letter has been written to MCD to remove the garbage pile. A tender has been issued to increase the height of the boundary wall of the zoo. Right now, the barbed wire of the zoo, which was damaged by stray dogs, has been repaired. According to reports, this is not the first time stray dogs have killed zoo animals. Earlier in the year 2012, stray dogs had hunted Chinkara deer. The remains of the Chinkara deer were also recovered the next day. Deep wounds were found on his neck and head.

In fact, stray dogs in Delhi get their food only through garbage or hunting. They rarely have contact with human settlements. Such dogs have become a major threat to many species found around sanctuaries, and wetlands. Especially the species of birds are at greater risk from these stray dogs.
