The Coronavirus has spread all over the country. On the other hand, earthquakes have occurred in Delhi more than ten times in the last one and a half months. Experts are seeing both earthquakes in a positive and negative way. Some scientists say that it is not entirely correct to consider the recurring earthquakes as the result of a big earthquake. On the other hand, it is also possible that these earthquakes of small intensity are reducing the chances of a big earthquake.

Professor Chandan Ghosh of Civil Engineering Department of IIT Jammu says that Delhi falls in the northern region. It is in Zone-4 in terms of the earthquake, so it is sensitive. Due to changes in the environment, earthquake centres are also changing. This is happening due to a change of plates. Delhi is close to the Himalayas, which was formed by mixing of tectonic plates like India and Eurasia. Due to the stir in these plates within the earth, the risk of an earthquake is highest in areas like Delhi-NCR, Kanpur and Lucknow. Sohna, Mathura and Delhi-Moradabad have three fault lines near Delhi, due to which the possibility of a major earthquake cannot be ruled out. The small earthquake can reduce the chance of a big earthquake. The Delhi Ridge region is a low danger area, while the medium risk areas are South West, North West and Western areas. The most threatened areas are the North Eastern Region. The scales have also changed to measure the risk of an earthquake.

Further in his statement, Professor Ghosh says that at present there is no scientific basis in Delhi-NCR to reach a conclusion based on fault line movement, ground vibration, building response. Professor ML Sharma of IIT Roorkee says that it would be wrong to make any assessment about the frequent earthquakes in Delhi-NCR. These earthquakes are coming due to the fault present in Delhi-NCR. Sometimes this frequency increases and sometimes it decreases. It is better that we should adopt anti-earthquake prevention measures. Retrofitting of old buildings and places should be done. Professor Durgesh C Rai, the convener of the National Information Center of Earthquake Engineering, IIT Kanpur, says that the possibility of a major earthquake is less than the type of local fault cesses that are frequent in Delhi-NCR. He said that earthquakes intensifying in the Himalayan belt can affect Delhi-NCR. If this happens continuously there then it can be a bell of danger. In such a situation, the most important thing is that we make our homes anti-earthquake.
