Delnaaz Irani decided to fly to London to spend the day (September 4) with her brother Porus and his family after a few pre-birthday get-togethers with family and friends in the city. Her fiancé Percy Karkaria was supposed to accompany her, but his visa application was delayed. Delnaaz was prepared to abandon her trip because she was so disappointed, but Percy insisted that she go alone.

"Percy and I had been planning the trip for almost a year, and he applied for a lengthy leave of absence well in advance to travel with me," she says. When everything appeared to be in order, Percy's visa failed to materialize, which severely derailed our plan? I made it clear that I would not be leaving him behind. But he insisted that I stick to our plan and that, once his visa was approved, he would follow me. He urged me to "fly solo," even though the idea of travelling alone made me feel quite uneasy. He wanted me to enjoy myself and remember my 50th birthday. Naturally, I was away from him on my birthday.

She had no idea that two weeks later, he would surprise her by unexpectedly flying into London. The surprise has been overwhelming, Delnaaz says. My prayers have been heard, and I had almost given up hope that he was here. The ideal birthday present ever was received!

A great time to take stock of your life and approach it from a fresh perspective is when you turn 50. She had previously mentioned that she might propose to Percy on her 50th birthday, shocking everyone. We then inquire as to what became of the plan. She responds, "I think marriage is overrated. I feel awkward and uneasy whenever people ask me about it. I've experienced a lot of ups and downs. I used to tease my friends about getting married and surprising them on my 50th birthday, but I suppose I shouldn't hold back any longer. Percy and I are content together as a couple and don't need to exchange legal documents to formalize our union. We are blessed to have each other's love. Even though we may have found love again, we still do not get married twice. My family and Percy are comfortable with this choice of mine.
