Despite peace talks, fighting escalates in Ukraine

Despite negotiations aimed at securing a peace, fighting in Russia's war on Ukraine continues. According to media reports, missile attacks killed dozens of civilians in the country's second city, Kharkiv, while air raid sirens sounded in the capital, Kyiv. The Russian shelling of Kharkiv has been called a "war crime" by Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to the media reports, fierce shelling was reported in the northern city of Chernihiv. Russia is attacking Ukraine on several fronts, but Ukrainian resistance has delayed its advance. All three cities are still under Ukrainian control. Economic and diplomatic moves have continued away from the battlefields.

President Vladimir Putin has banned Russians from sending funds overseas in an effort to prevent the rouble's value from plummeting as a result of the imposition of sanctions. A rare emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly heard the secretary general's appeal for an immediate cease-fire. The first round of talks between Ukrainian and Russian officials finished on the northern border with Belarus.

Although it seemed doubtful that the meeting would result in a breakthrough, a Ukrainian official stated that both parties will now return to their respective capitals for more consultations before a second round of talks. Russia said both sides had agreed to continue talking and would meet again “in the next few days”.
