Bangalore: The ongoing hijab dispute in Karnataka was heard in the High Court on Monday. Meanwhile, the girl students, who had filed a petition in favour of wearing a hijab, urged the high court to allow them to wear hijab with school uniform colour. Advocate Devdutt Kamat, appearing for the girl students of Government Pre-University College in Udupi, told the court that "I am making a positive demand for allowing students to wear hijab with the colour of school uniforms."
Advocate Devdutt Kamat also claimed that if central schools allow Muslim girls to wear hijabs with the colour of school uniforms, then the same can be done here. At the same time, Devdutt Kamat said that the hijab is an essential religious practice. Banning its use is a violation of Article 25 of the Indian Constitution. Kamat, counsel for Muslim students, told the court that the girls studying in the second pre-university class have been wearing hijabs for the past two years since they took admission.
At the same time, Devdutt Kamat said that a College Development Committee (CDC) has been authorized by the government to determine the uniform. The girl students had filed a petition before the court of High Court Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, Justice JM Khaji and Justice Krishna M Dixit.
