New Delhi: Jayant Chaudhary, leader of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), which has formed an alliance with the BJP-led NDA ahead of this year's Lok Sabha elections, expressed his gratitude on X for the Bharat Ratna awarded to his grandfather and former Prime Minister, Chaudhary Charan Singh.

"Dil jeet liya (Won hearts)," Jayant Chaudhary's post on the micro-blogging site stated, in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's announcement of the government's decision to confer the Bharat Ratna on Chaudhary Charan Singh.

PM Modi, in his tweet, dedicated the Bharat Ratna to Chaudhary Charan Singh's "incomparable contribution to the country."

"He had dedicated his entire life to the rights and welfare of farmers. Be it as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh or the Home Minister of the country, and even as an MLA, he always prioritized nation-building. His dedication to our farmer brothers and sisters and his commitment to democracy during the emergency is inspiring to the entire nation," read the Prime Minister's tweet.

Chaudhary Charan Singh served as the fifth Prime Minister of India and also held the position of Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh twice. He is remembered as a "champion of farmers."

The BJP's decision to confer the Bharat Ratna on Chaudhary Charan Singh is viewed as an outreach to the Jat community.

Meanwhile, as per the seat-sharing arrangement between the BJP and RLD in the NDA, Jayant Chaudhary's party will contest two Lok Sabha seats - Baghpat and Bijnor in western Uttar Pradesh - and has also been promised a Rajya Sabha seat. The formal announcement of the alliance, however, is expected in the next two to three days.
