New Delhi: Following the announcement of Lok Sabha election dates, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is embarking on a brief visit to Bhutan. With the implementation of the Code of Conduct, no agreements or announcements will be made between the two countries during this time. Despite these restrictions, the significance of this tour is not overlooked.

PM Modi's visit to Bhutan coincides with the recent visit of Bhutan's Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay to India, marking a significant diplomatic exchange. It's noteworthy that this visit occurs as India prepares for elections, making it a rare occasion for an Indian Prime Minister to undertake foreign travel post-election announcement, given the limitations imposed by the code of conduct.

In 2009, a similar instance occurred when a former Indian Prime Minister visited Britain to attend a G-20 meeting after election dates were announced. PM Modi's visit to Bhutan holds strategic importance, particularly amidst the ongoing border dispute with China.

Notably, during Tshering Tobgay's tenure, Bhutan played a crucial role in resolving its border dispute with China, culminating in a signed agreement between the two nations. The border shared by India, Bhutan, and China presents complexities, with certain areas forming a strategic bottleneck. Doklam witnessed a violent clash between Indian and Chinese forces, highlighting the region's significance, especially in the context of India's northeastern territories.

The border agreement between Bhutan and China entailed a territorial exchange, reflecting Bhutan's diplomatic engagement and cooperation. Tobgay's visit to India marked his first foreign visit after assuming office in January, underscoring the importance of bilateral relations.

In light of these developments, PM Modi's visit aims to strengthen ties between India and Bhutan, fostering deeper cooperation and partnership between the two nations.
