CHENNAI: On Monday, January 9, the Tamil Nadu Assembly witnessed commotion as soon as Governor R. N. Ravi began his usual speech to open the session.

In response to the Governor's recent comments that "Tamizhagam" rather than "Tamil Nadu" would be a more appropriate name for the State, legislators from the ruling DMK and its allies, the Congress and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), began chanting anti-Governor slogans and staged a walkout from the assembly. Don't impose BJP, RSS philosophy, shouted DMK MLAs in opposition to the Governor.

The Governor's position was contested by the DMK and its allies, who charged him with adhering to the BJP's ideological line. The legislators shouted, "This is not Nagaland; this is proud Tamil Nadu."

Despite the ruckus, Governor Ravi carried on with his speech. The leaders in the assembly also demanded that online gambling be outlawed. Legislators objected, blaming the Governor for not having ratified the bill outlawing online gambling.

The state is currently experiencing a power struggle between the DMK government in power and the Raj Bhavan over a number of measures that the governor is considering, including one that would outlaw online gambling and bet-based online games of chance like rummy.

As of December 2022, there are a total of 21 bills pending at Raj Bhavan.

On October 1, 2022, an ordinance banning internet gambling was put into effect. To replace that ordinance, the government published a gazette notice in this regard, which was approved and delivered to Raj Bhavan for assent.
