The day also marks the birth anniversary and death anniversary of eminent doctor and former Bengal CM Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy. History: National Doctors' Day was first celebrated in the year 1991 with the aim of honouring the work of former Bengal CM Dr BC Roy. He was a renowned physician who has also worked tirelessly to serve society. On February 4, 1961, he was awarded the country's highest civilian award 'Bharat Ratna'. He is also recognised for setting up medical institutions like Jadavpur TB Hospital, Victoria Institution (College), and Chittaranjan Cancer Hospital among others.
