USA: Donald Trump's infamous Twitter account was reinstated on Saturday after the platform's new owner Elon Musk rejected a narrow majority of voters, just days after the former US president announced another White House bid.

Trump's account was banned from the platform in early 2018, for his role in an attempt to overturn the 2020 election results by a mob of his supporters at the US Capitol on 6 January.

"The population has spoken. Trump will be reinstated," Musk tweeted shortly after the 24-hour Twitter poll ended on his account.

"Vox populi, vox dei," he also posted on Friday, repeating the Latin proverb, which translates to "the voice of the people is the voice of God."

In the end, more than 15 million of the 237 million daily Twitter users voted to restore the controversial profile, with 51.8 percent in favor and 48.2 percent against.

Trump, who had more than 88 million followers on Twitter when his account was suspended, has enjoyed using it as a mouthpiece during his presidency, posting policy announcements, attacking political rivals and communicating with supporters. .

Many of his political allies insisted on his return on Saturday.
"Welcome back, @realdonaldtrump!" House Republican Paul Gosar tweeted.

Musk's poll sought a simple "yes" or "no" response to the billionaire Twitter CEO's Friday statement to "reinstate former President Trump."
"It's fascinating to watch Trump polls on Twitter!" Musk echoed the views of the one-to-many messaging platform's controversial and hard-charging new owner in a series of tweets on Saturday morning.

He has conducted similar surveys before, last year asking followers whether they should sell stock in his electric car company, Tesla. After that poll, he sold over $1 billion in stock.

Trump has said he will not return to the popular platform, but will instead focus on his own network, Truth Social, which he founded after being banned from Twitter.

Trump appeared via video on Saturday at a Republican Jewish Coalition meeting in Las Vegas, saying he welcomed Musk's election and was an admirer of the man himself, but rejected any retraction.

I like her... "You know, she's a character, and I like characters," he explained.
"They posted a poll, and the response was overwhelming... "However, I do have something to name... Truth Social."
"I don't see it because I don't see any reason for it," he said of returning to the stage.

Musk, who is also the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has come under fire for overhauling Twitter, which he bought less than a month ago for US$44 billion.

Since then, he has fired half of Twitter's 7,500 employees, scrapped a work-from-home policy, and imposed longer working hours, while criticizing and delaying his efforts to reform the company. happened.

Their failed attempts to reform user verification with a controversial subscription service resulted in a deluge of fake accounts and pranks, prompting major advertisers to abandon the platform.

Musk appeared to be moving forward with his plans on Friday, when he reinstated previously banned accounts, including that of comedian Kathy Griffin, who was removed after impersonating her on the site.
