VIJAYAWADA: CPM activists on Thursday staged a massive protest at BRTS Road in the city, demanding an explanation from the Prime Minister on drug smuggling through Adani-owned ports.

State executive member of CPM C Babu Rao told that the drug mafia had selected Gujarat and Adani ports for covert operations, which the authorities knew better. He said the details of smuggling of heroin, cocaine and other substances should be revealed and the masterminds behind the racket should be exposed. He demanded a thorough investigation of drug smuggling to save the youth from falling prey to drugs. The investigating agencies harass the transporters in small matters, but they are not doing anything when there is smuggling of drugs worth thousands of crores.

The police refused permission for the demonstration and a large number of policemen stopped the activists from marching. He said that the probe agency has so far targeted only a few people except big players in smuggling. The workers raised slogans demanding employment to the youth, not drugs. CPM leaders Donepudi Kashinath, DV Krishna, B Ramana Rao, T Praveen, Jhansi, Subba Rao, R Koteswara Rao, Krishnamurthy and others participated in the protest.
