DUBAI: An Indian man, who crashed his car into another vehicle while driving under the influence of drug in Dubai, has been fined 25,000 dirhams (USD 6,806).

The Indian driver, 39, swerved into another car that was parked on the right side of the road while he was driving through a neighborhood in Bur Dubai, The National reported.

On August 18, after the collision, the man, whose name was suppressed in the report, left the scene but was quickly apprehended by police after cameras picked up the car's licence plate.

He told the police that he was under the influence of alcohol when he was driving his card, following which, he spent two days in detention before being released on bail.

He has been told by judges to pay 25,000 dirhams, and if he doesn't, he will spend eight months in jail. He was also fined for skipping his hearing at the Traffic Court in Dubai.

In terms of legal procedure, the UAE has zero tolerance for drunk driving.

Driving while intoxicated carries a jail sentence, a potential fine of at least 20,000 dirhams, and 60 days of vehicle impoundment as part of the punishment. A driving licence suspension for a period of three months to two years is one possible additional punishment.

Both locals and visitors are subject to the same drinking restrictions.

According to local media, alcohol-impaired drivers are responsible for about 14% of all traffic accidents in the UAE alone.
