A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's western province of North Sumatra early Tuesday, but no damage or casualties were reported, according to a local disaster official. According to reports, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency said on Tuesday that the quake did not cause massive tsunami waves.

According to the agency, the quake struck at 00:04 a.m. Jakarta time on Tuesday (1704 GMT Monday), with the epicentre 130 kilometres southwest of Nias Barat district and a depth of 16 kilometres beneath the seabed. The tremors were also felt in nearby West Sumatra and Aceh provinces, according to the report.

The quake's intensity was measured at III to IV MMI (Modified Mercalli Intensity) in the districts of Nias Barat, Nias Selatan, and Nias Utara in North Sumatra, as well as the district of Mentawai islands in West Sumatra, according to the report. The tremors were also felt at II to III MMI in Aceh's Singkil district and North Sumatra's Gunung Sitoli, according to the report. According to a senior disaster agency official who spoke to the media before the quake, there were no preliminary reports of damage or injuries in both provinces.
