A massive earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck around the Mizoram-Myanmar border on Friday, shaking parts of Assam, Manipur, Tripura, and the surrounding northeastern region, according to the statement by the authorities concerned. However, there were no reported damages or deaths.

The earthquakes were also detected in Bangladesh, according to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremor struck at 5.15 a.m. on Friday morning, 35 kilometres below the surface. Two aftershocks were detected at 5.53 a.m. and 8 a.m., respectively, after the initial temblor.

The epicentre of the tremor is 73 kilometres southeast of Thenzawl in Mizoram's Serchhip district, which borders Myanmar, according to a disaster management official in Aizawl. As per the information from the sources, "no damage has yet been reported as a result of the earthquake," but "the tremor was felt powerfully all around Mizoram." There have been no complaints of injury or property damage so far, according to disaster management officials in various northeastern states.

According to seismologists, the northeastern region is the world's sixth most earthquake-prone belt.
