A 3.4 magnitude earthquake shook Ladakh, India's northernmost region, this morning at 8:25 am, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).

The NCS confirmed the tremor's impact in the area, pinpointing the epicenter at a latitude of 35.44 and a longitude of 77.36, occurring at a depth of 10 km. The NCS shared details on X, stating, "Magnitude: 3.4 earthquake occurred on 02-12-2023, 08:25:38 IST, Lat: 35.44 & Long: 77.36, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Ladakh."

Simultaneously, Bangladesh experienced a 5.8 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale, according to Reuters. The German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) reported this earthquake's depth at 10 km.

Leh and Ladakh, both positioned in Seismic Zone IV, face substantial earthquake vulnerability due to their location in the tectonically active Himalayan region, which frequently encounters tremors.

The identification of earthquake-prone zones in India relies on scientific assessments considering historical data, past seismic events, and tectonic configurations. The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) categorizes the nation into four seismic zones – Zones V, IV, III, and II. Zone V contends with the highest seismicity, while Zone II experiences the least.
