EasyJet's Summer Flights: Air Traffic Concerns Lead to 2% Cancellations

EasyJet, a British airline, has decided to cancel 2% of its summer flight schedule, affecting the travel plans of around 180,000 customers. This unfortunate situation has been attributed to challenges faced by air traffic control across Europe. Last year's peak season in Europe was marred by cancellations, resulting in airport chaos due to the industry's insufficient staff to handle the sudden surge in demand following the pandemic.

Notably, air traffic control issues are expected to be a weak point this summer, as warned by Eurocontrol, the entity responsible for managing European airspace. EasyJet, the largest airline in the UK in terms of passenger volume, announced on Monday that implementing changes now would help them avoid last-minute cancellations, which are not only more costly but also cause greater inconvenience to passengers.

Although the airline reassured that it had an ample number of crew members and pilots, concerns over air traffic compelled them to cancel 1,700 flights primarily from their main hub, London's Gatwick airport. These cancellations account for approximately 2% of the 90,000 flights originally scheduled for July and August. However, easyJet managed to rebook 95% of the affected passengers on alternative flights by consolidating multiple frequencies.

Several factors have contributed to the airspace constraints in Europe, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has reduced capacity for aircraft. Additionally, staffing issues at certain air control locations and industrial action have caused bottlenecks, increasing the likelihood of cancellations on the day of travel. EasyJet expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by these circumstances in a statement released to the public.

In trading on Monday, easyJet's shares remained unchanged.
